[Health] Concern at the restriction on recruitment into psychiatry. HSE NDTP have indicated that only 20 new trainees can be recruited into psychiatry training this year. At least 60 trainees are recruited each year. If HSE-NDTP were to agree, this capacity could also be increased. In six or seven years’ time, there will be a consequential deficit in the numbers of fully trained specialists available to take up consultant posts in Psychiatry in Ireland. 90 applicants were received.

Concerns that the regulatory condition of the commission seems to have been diluted by giving it increasing responsibilities without increasing its resources. Among the issues that are a manifestation of this is the fact that there is no representation from child and adolescent psychiatry on the commission itself.

[Health] Following the Parliamentary Forum on Mental Health hosted by the Ceann Comhairle the College offered to work with him to further promote awareness of mental health and illness in society and to discuss how best to support TDs and Senators in this regard.
